Kern Audubon to install fishing line recycling receptacles at local parks
Kern Audubon is in the process of installing fishing line recycling receptacles at our local parks.
The improper disposal of the fishing lines has become a big problem for our water fowl and other birds and animals as it gets tangled around their feet and other parts of the body, cutting off circulation and causing injuries and death.
Once the line gets wrapped around the animal, they are helpless to remove it on their own.
“I have seen firsthand some of the damage this has caused, ducks and geese with wings damaged and legs and feet missing. This makes these birds easy prey for predators,” said KAS Board President Mike Lahorgue.
Former Kern Audubon president and board member Harry Love built theses receptacles. With the support of the local parks, the process of installing the fishing line receptacles at various locations has begun. Once the receptacles are filled, they will be emptied and the fishing line will be returned to the manufacturer to be recycled.
How can you help?
Spread the word, use these receptacles, and encourage your friends and neighbors to use these receptacles instead of using trash cans. Once the trash cans are taken to the landfill, they still are a threat to the animals that live there.
Thank you for your support.
